How to look after your composite door

Whilst composite doors are a relatively low maintenance product, they still require some attention, care and cleaning to keep them at their best.

How to look after your composite door

All doors from The Lockwood Window Company are guaranteed (click here for more information) but, we still recommend that they are cleaned and maintained every month.

If you’re unsure of where to start and what to do, don’t worry. In this blog we’ll be providing you with some tips and steps on how to look after your composite door.

Cleaning

To clean the door itself, all you need is a warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Never use scouring pads, abrasive chemical cleaners, steam, high-pressure cleaners, bleach, solvent or adhesives. The warm soapy water will remove any buildup of dirt and grime without causing damage.

You can also use this warm soapy water to clean the door frame. If you have any stubborn stains, use a specialised PVCu cleaner paying close attention to the manufacturer's guidelines.

For cleaning glass (including external and leaded), use warm soapy water and finish with a proprietary glass cleaner.

Clean handles, letter plates, spy holes, numbers & knockers by wiping clean with a cloth and warm water that contains a mild detergent.

Maintenance

When it comes to maintenance, we recommend lubricating all moving parts of the door every 6 months.

With hinges, clean handles, letter plates, spy holes, numbers & knockers, we recommend using light engineering oil e.g 3 in One or a similar product. We don’t recommend using WD40 as it’s a cleaning agent and will dry out very quickly

For locks, we recommend a Teflon based lubricant. Don’t use oil or graphite powder.

If any weather seals (gaskets) become dislodged, simply slide them back into their grooves.
